The cedar smells like pencils, like school. It smells like saunas and cigar boxes and a little bit like fuel, something sharp and clean. I spent the last days lining a small closet with Eastern red cedar, purply red planks with blond streaks. Chansha is the Lakota name for this red wood. I took home some scraps to tuck into sweaters to repel the moths that eat the wool in our apartment. The woman whose house it is we’re working on in Cambridgeport, whose closet I lined with cedar, gave me a jar of raspberry jam she made from her raspberry patch in Vermont.
